Bathroom Shower 80’s Gold

My bathroom shower trim is 80’s gold. I’d like to update my fixtures. Can the shower trim be updated to a brushed sliver look?

Hi Michele, is the trim metal or plastic?

Yep I've seen others do this using Rustoleum's brand of hardware spray paint. You'll need to tape the glass off really well and hang plastic so the fumes/particles don't hit the floor (or anywhere) or get to the rest of the house. Its pretty stinky stuff but if works really well.

I agree that Rustoleum hardware spray paint is the way to go!

I used Rustoleum spray paint, but first I cleaned the trim well and lightly scuffed it up with sandpaper. Then I applied a coat of spray primer specifically for metal. After I sprayed on the Rustoleum oil-rubbed bronze paint, I finished with 2 coats of spray clear coat. Since I had already spent the time covering up & taping everything off, it was no trouble to prime, then paint then top coat. Worked great with no chips, no peeling---no problems! Good luck!

Rustoleum spray paint is amazing!!! And...it doesn't chip on metal much like it can on wood . However, being in a shower, the moisture could cause a problem with the paint. You will want to prep this well! Make sure everything is DRY DRY DRY prior to starting this. I wouldn't use that shower for more than a week before starting the project. I agree with Baxter, sand first, tac cloth, vac, tape, then apply primer, paint. You will definitely need a top coat sealer like a polycrylic and put a couple of coats on. Be careful when peeling up the tape when you are done.

While you are out looking for rustoleum finishes, you have to check out Black Stainless steel!!! I used it on a metal furniture project a couple of weeks ago and it was gorgeous. Also goes on like butter. It has highlights of metallic silver that come out on the highest points of your project. You can't find it everywhere. I have no idea why. I had to get it at Ace Hardware. Good luck! Have fun with your project.

Hi Michele, yes, you can change that 80's gold to silver. Rustoleum is your best go to spray paint. As usual, the prep work is the key to a successful outcome. Sand/scuff the parts you're gong to paint and mask everything off well (you'll be amazed at where spray paint can go). You'll want to be certain your entire area is dry as a bone before you make that first stroke with the spray can. Then, remember several light coats is much better than one thick one. Let dry well between coats and then after complety finished, let the paint "cure" a few days before applying a couple coats of clear marine-type sealer. Let that dry as well...the longer the better before unmasking and using the shower again.

you may want to reconsider - gold hardware is really back in style. Check it out before you spray.

Yes! If you go to Home Depot or Lowes, they will help you find the right paint. That would look so nice in black or brushed silver!

Hi Michelle: Yes you certainly can, but it is a very messy stinky job. You need to tape off all your glass with newspaper, the walls and the ceiling and the floor. You don't want to be cleaning overspray forever. Have good ventilation in the room, wear a mask. You don't want to breathe in the spray paint. First coat with Rustoleum auto primer, then when dry 48 hours later, lightly sand the fine bumps. If you cannot find Rustoleum auto primer go to an auto store and buy their brand. I know Lowes sells it. Then lightly spray the silver color of your choice. Hammered paint has texture and is very forgiving. Spray light coats. You can respray up to one hour then have to wait 48 hours. It is going to take several days to do this project because of dry and cure time. You will probably need 3 coats of paint. When dry, 48 hours after last coat, spray with Sprar Varnish. Do NOT use your shower for several days, you want the paint to cure.

My nephew painted his 2 years ago and it has held well. You could also add glaze to it for an aged bronze look.

Yeah sure you can, i have a similar one i also brushed it silver and installed a steam generator on it after i renovated my new house last month, when i moved my new shower and bathroom was looking really old and ancient, the siding was made of wood and it was really rusty and broken, i also did some repairing inside like panting, flooring, etc. changing the old doors was also in my plan, and actually the best thing on it now is the shower after i bought a steam shower generator from https://beststeamshowers.com/steam-shower-generators/ which makes really good steam. Now it feels like a totally new experience.
