Paint or wash the surround a stone color in the brown family. If you don’t use it, put pillar candles in it.
We did this to one of our rental properties: https://www.alifeunfolding.com/blog-1/2016/10/6/rental-housequick-and-easy-fireplace-update?rq=fireplace
You can build a simple frame to cover the whole thing out of 2 X 4's and plywood. Add wood and stain or tile to the frame. You can pick up two posts at antique shops or use part of a porch pillar on either side to make it look like they are holding up the mantle.
Kelli: I think white washing it would really help! https://www.countryliving.com/diy-crafts/how-to/a4668/whitewash-furniture/

Yuck. It looks like someone painted the natural stone. First thing is to is to try to strip it. It will be a mess but it can be done. Use Kleen Strip, where glasses and gloves and cover up all around because it could splash. You need a stiff brush to work it off. Good luck.
It’s not that bad! The simplest thing would be to paint it white and add a new wooden mantle. :)
Perhaps you can locate a nice piece of colorful flagstone and use it as a guide to repaint the various pieces shown on the fireplace front. Some vaiations in colors would break up the portion now painted solid and make it more interessting; similar to how this patio was floor was updated.......

Hi Kelly, you can paint it two tone by tracing out the grout lines and doing them in either a lighter or darker color, you could likely just paint the grout and and keep the nice grey color on the rocks. I have attached pictures with dark and white grout to show the different look
Hello, Fireplaces can be painted or often retiled and I find looking around at the visuals on Pinterest or Houzz might offer some inspiration and ideas.
