I started shopping around for concrete planters and was shocked by how expensive some of them were. So of course my DIY mind started brainstorming ways to create them on a budget.

Faux Concrete Planters

Before

I used leftover plastic bottles from my recycle bin to create my planters.

Use leftover materials

I had leftover thin-set and grout from a past tile project. That is what I used to cover my plastic bottles. It gives the same look as colored concrete. Look through your project supplies and see what you have on hand. Otherwise you can purchase some cheap thin-set, grout, or concrete from your home store.

Here’s the process, step by step

I started by taking empty plastic containers from the recycle bin and cut them down to the size planter I wanted using a carpet knife. Instead of concrete, I used leftover thin-set and grout from a past tile project. Using a putty knife, I spread the thin-set over the exterior of my plastic containers smoothing it out as I went. Once they were fully covered, I placed them on a paper plate and I let them dry for 24 hours. That's it! Just like that I had faux concrete planters! You can fill them with moss and add faux greenery or fill them with potting soil and your favorite plant. This is such an easy and inexpensive DIY.

Finish with real or faux plants

Once you have let the planters dry for 24hrs, fill them with potting soil or faux moss. Finish with your favorite real or faux plants!
