I like using a good quality acrylic latex paint in an enamel finish that is specifically made for cabinets and trim. I find it to be more durable that using chalk paint. Benjamin More, Sherwin Williams and Behr are of good quality. Always prime first when using acrylic latex paint. Chalk paint would be OK as long as you finish it with a few coats of a clear water based poly to protect your paint finish. For a big job like this I prefer using a better quality chalk paint like Annie Sloan. Yes it is a bit more expensive but I think this is the best chalk paint for furniture and cabinets. Hi Bj, there are so many great paints out there. If you do not want to use a latex based paint you can use a true chalk or milk paint and then finish them with wax or a clear coat. There are also great latex paints out there perfect for cabinets as well. The really important part is to clean them well with a degreaser before painting and then you should be good to go.
After cleaning my mom and I tackled her kitchen a few years back and its held up beautiful. We lightly hand sanded them, cleaned them again, applied two coats of primer, two coats of paint and three coats of polycrylic for sealant. Everything we used was water based and her cabinets are holding up REALLY well, they still look brand new from the time we did it:
If you have some gray counter tops, you could paint it black or white! If you have some brown counter tops, you could do a tanish color, black, or even just dark brown to pop with a lighter tone. I hope you are doing well!

I would use Satin or eggshell finish as they are more forgiving than gloss paint.
Latex enamel is my choice.
If you have some gray counter tops, you could paint it black or white! If you have some brown counter tops, you could do a tanish color, black, or even just dark brown to pop with a lighter tone. I hope you are doing well!
