How to stop dogs from pooping in my yard?

Someone is walking their dog by my house who leaves me a daily present. Is there something I can spray on the lawn to discourage this that doesn't harm the grass? Or any other suggestions are welcome. Yesterday I put a sign on the median with plastic bags, but I'm not hopeful that someone rude enough to think this is okay will use them.

Once one dog marks a spot, every dog that goes by has to leave their calling card. Dogs always sniff first. Try sprinkling some pepper on the spot. This will make it less attractive. Wont hurt the dogs. Just makes them sneeze.so they will avoid that spot. You will have to repepper frequently but pepper is cheap.

Or you could just install a motion activated sprinkler.

Thanks for the ideas! No poop left yesterday, so maybe my sign helped. Or maybe they walked a different route.

I think putting out your sign with plastic bags is a very helpful idea. Hopefully the dog walker will get the message. There is a product called Dog and Cat Stopper that you could spray. It has mint and castor oil in it's formula. Dogs and cats supposedly don't like the smell of mint. I use it to keep my dog out of the mulch in my garden. It does work but you have to spray it frequently especially after a rain. It may or may not work for you. Too much pepper can be harmful to dogs and I am not sure if they will associate the pepper with not pooping in your yard.

If you can locate essential oil of Rue, mix it as per directions and spray it on the perimeter of your lawn. The dog will typically give it a wide berth to avoid it. Some people have had to resort to adding a drop of Dawn dish detergent to give it better sticking capability, but you'll probably need to reapply after heavy rain. You can always up the ante with cayenne pepper and chili powder...some animal owners are incredibly ignorant and or lazy when it comes to their animals. Should it continue, you could confront the owner, post no tresspassing signs, or videotape the dog and the owner, then notify/show local authorities the video. Your property is not to be used for the convenience of others.

I never heard of oil of Rue! I'm hopeful my sign worked.

Sprinkle Cayenne pepper or Chili powder around. One sniff and they'll remember. May need to reapply

Hello. How frustrating. Understand your disgust. I have offered offenders baggies...

Maybe one of those motion activated sprinklers would teach a lesson. Thry use them to discourage deer?

    • Nancy Nancy on May 17, 2020

I have an idea who the offender is, but unfortunately, I haven't caught them in the act! I love the idea of the motion activated sprinkler! I saw that idea to deter people who break into cars in the middle of the night.

I apologize for the inconvenience this person is causing you. I am a dog owner and live in an apartment complex where if you do not clean up after your animal you will get a fine. I have seen in dog parks and and other areas, signs that state clean up after your animals as well as doggy bags to encourage encourage them. If all else fails set up a small camera to catch the person in the act and you can take legal action if you want to
