Elisa, if you are removing rust from a sink, Barkeepers Friend is the best. You can find it where comet and ajax cleansers are sold. It is GREAT. If you mean rust on iron, put equal amounts of water and white vinegar in a sprayer and spray it on the iron skillet or what ever is rusty. Let it set 10 minutes. Use a palm scrubber or other scrub brush and brush it off and rinse. Repeat until you see no rust. Then use vegetable oil or any grease and bake it at 325 to 350 deg. F for an hour. Repeat the greasing and baking if you see dark spots on the iron. Sometimes I have to do it 3 times if the pan set out in the rain and was left. This will make it shine like new.
Hello! Here’s a link that might be helpful. I have had excellent results soaking smaller items in white vinegar in a mason jar. I’m not too sure how big your item is?

I like using a wire brush on my dremel to remove surface rust from metal.
I've had good luck with this: https://amzn.to/2yaSCgv
Hello Elsia,
A little rust - Try WD40. Loose rust - Rub down with sandpaper or Sanding machine and then prime any bare metal and then use Metal Paint such as Hammerite. Well worth the effort!
Rustoleum and WD40 make a very good rust remover. Navel Jelly is also great.
I usually use a metal brush to get all the loose stuff off. You can also sand it. Clean it up with WD40 or a good product like CLR. Even a can of coke will remove rust if you let it soak. Once clean and dry I use a spray paint like Rustoleum that has a rust inhibitor. Wear protective gloves and goggles because the metal fragments are sharp. Good luck and stay safe!
Hi Elisa: Depending on what the rust is on depends on how you remove it. If it's on plastic, you can remove it with a magic sponge, but the yellowish stain will remain. If it's on iron, you can use WD40, or vinegar, but don't let it set on cast iron. Here is a site that shows what different things do to clean rust off of iron https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZRBte7JH78 here's another one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjvgPJ0coo4 Good luck
Steel wool or a stiff wire brush to remove excess. Then you can either sand or apply a lubricant like naval jelly or wd-40. I've heard coca cola recommended but have not used it.
All the above a great ideas. If this is severe rust, then Naval Jelly will take it off.
It is like a paint stripper in the sense that it must be used outside with proper PPE.
Hi Elisa I am not sure what is stained with rust so here are a few videos for you to check out
