How to Paint a Built-in to Match Your Trim
Do you have a built-in that needs some updating? If so, here’s an EASY way to give that built-in a whole new look!
Generously spray TSP cleaner on your wood and scrub with a microfiber cloth.
With an orbital sander OR just plain old sandpaper, sand your built-in. Your goal is to take off any glossy finishes and rough it up enough that the paint will adhere to the surface long term.
With TSP, scrub your built-in again. You’ll need to remove any dust, dirt and grime. Let your built- in completely dry before doing the next step.
Apply a high quality primer. I used a 1 1/2 inch angled brush to help get the edges precisely.
After your primer is completely dry, apply your paint. I used Sherwin Williams Trim Paint in Dover White to match the trim color of my home. Once your first coat dries add another coat. I ended up using three coats of paint on the outsides of my built-in. Let the paint sit for a minimum of 24 hours before using it.
