I live on the Canadian prairies and our fairly new home was built in the middle of a hay field. This means we get ALLOT of wind so everything we have outside needs to be sturdy to not blow away.. enter wooden spools.

Before raw wood

Here is the raw wood spool before --- of the next two tables before milk painting. They are functional but lack color and presence

Clean well

I used a scrub brush, soapy water and hose to clean but a pressure washer works great too. Let it dry well before painting.

Here is another in milk paint

This smaller version wooden spool was painted in two colors of Homestead House milk paint ; Laurentien and Quaker blue. The layered colors give a great depth to it. It was sealed with tung oil; the best outdoor sealant to protect the paint.

Check out my deck rug tutorial I shared here last year as well.

Another milk painted one

This large spool is painted Homestead House Milk Paint loyalist, renfrew blue, Quaker blue, and laurentien along with white, black and a cream and both bottoms were painted Homestead House Milk Paint garden seed. It too was sealed in tung oil for outdoor use.

They are now ready for years of service.
