I've been giving my hallway a makeover and I wanted to make a little feature area including some family photos. But I was thinking this time I want something a little bit different than traditional framed photos. So I decided to make posters 🙂 I find that it shows love and caring, and it's a little bit more personal, cause you have to go through all the process of making it, which makes it even more special.

Materials

What do we need for this?

  1. Photos ( mine are 20x30cm )
  2. Paper glue
  3. Stapler gun
  4. Ruler, measuring tape
  5. Poster paper
  6. Thin wooden trim pieces ( mine are 0,5x1cm )
  7. Stain or paint
  8. Rope
  9. Exacto knife

I started by measuring and cutting my poster paper to the wanted size. Tip: use an exacto knife to cut the paper for a nicer look. I also suggest to measure your paper and mark the area where your photo should be placed. I marked the same distance from the left and the right edge, and of course the same from the top and the bottom. This way your photo is centered. Another tip: use paper glue. It's the only type of glue that will give you a nice, straight and smooth look, without any bubbles.

Now, when I have my paper done, I moved on to cut the wood for the frame. Decided to add extra 2 cm, to make it longer than the poster itself, so the wood is 1cm longer on each side. Just thought it looked better. I needed 6 pieces, cause I'm making 3 posters, so on each one I will be putting a top and a bottom pieace.

For a nice contrast with the paper and my wall ( which is light grey ) I decided to stain my wood, with just one light coat of dark stain. And I also did a quick whitewash over it as well, for a softer look. Of course you can do whatever you like. Paint it, stain it, leave it like that... It' s your call!

Once that the pait has dried, staple the poster on the frame. Another tip: start from the middle and towards the ends. That way you will avoid any bubbles and have a nice, straight edge.

The last thing is to decide how to hang it on the wall. I had some rope on hand, so I used that. Once again, I measured the lenght of the top frame, and stapeled the rope to the frame, so the distance between the end of the rope and both ends of the frame is equal. If you are making more than one poster, this is important, cause they will be displayed together, and if they don't look the same, it will not look very nice. So, we want them to match 🙂

And just one more thing. When you are hanging them on the wall, measure the area, divide the area into sections, and put one poster in the center of each section. That way the distance between them will be the same, and you will have a neat look. 🙂
