Upcycled Marimekko Herb Planters

I love the fabric designs of the Nordic company Marimekko. So I decided to use some paper napkins with their prints on to make some gorgeous designer upcycled herb planters. I've used their napkins before to make tin can planters in the garden which really brighten it up.

First of all get a large old soda bottle and cut it into 3 equal parts.

Make sure you take the lid off the top of the bottle.

Then place the lid bit of the plastic bottle inside the base upside down and discard the middle bit.

Next mix flour and water into a smooth paste the consistency of cream. Use this as glue to paper mache the outside of the bottles with strips of newspaper.

Leave the paper mache to dry throughly.

Then paint the bottles white. This is so the newspaper won't show through the decoupage.

Cut the paper napkins into strips.

By gently rubbing the napkin between your thumb and fore finger seperate the ply's. You will only need the top printed ply of the napkin for decoupage.

Decoupage the strips of napkins onto the painted bottles one by one.

When the whole planter is covered then add top layer of decoupage glue. This will act as a protective varnish once it has dried.

All that is left to do is to plant the herbs into the pots. You could of course plant succulents or other plants if you prefer. To make them into hanging planters you can make an upcycled holder for them like this one here.
