Sue: a whole potato works well too... follow with a lemon.
Pour ½ cup baking soda then ½ cup white vinegar in the drain and cover, letting sit for 20 minutes. Boil water, remove cover, and pour water down the drain. You may have to repeat the process.
Put some lemons down it
Ice cubes and lemons. Be sure to run the cold water for at least 30 seconds. You may also need to wipe the gasket (top and bottom) with a paste of baking soda, then scrub and rinse.
Another method is to brush on a light coat of wood glue. Whilst it’s still wet brush on the paint and then use a hair dryer until it’s ‘crackled’ to your liking.

Sprinkle baking soda down it and then vinegar. Let it sit and then grind in some lemon peels and flush with water.
Couple of ice cubes and lemon slices. If its trully gunky, then I would use Roebic drain cleaner with warm water overnight in the disposal.
I throw a handful of ice cubes in and run it or some cut up lemon rinds.
