What can be added to gypsum to improve its strength and durability (making souvenir fridge magnet)?

At that scale, fibers would not work. I would buy a polymer or acrylic additive that is sold in the ceramic floor tile Grout supplies section of the hardware store.
use epoxy coating that you can find at the local hardware store
You could try adding some white glue or fiberglass fibers. They could, however, interfere with the chemical reaction that hardens the gypsum. Worth a try though. Good luck!

I would add clear glue to it let it dry glue all sides that should do it
