How to Fit a Pop Up Socket in a Kitchen Counter or Desk
Here’s how to fit a pop up socket for UK plugs with USB ports in a laminate kitchen worktop. It’s relatively easy, but there’s a few things to bear in mind.

Recently, we installed a plug in pop up socket in our kitchen counter. These are great if you want to plug things in that you want to store away when not in use.
First, you'll need to make sure you have a hidden plug socket under a base unit or kitchen island. Or get an electrician to install one.
Note, pop up sockets come in lots of different styles and some need to be hard wired. This is a BASIC one that's like an extension cable and plugs straight into a socket.
Also, the plastic ring screws underneath the worktop (see above).
The most important part of drilling through your kitchen worktop successfully is to practice first.
Above, I have a selection of holesaws which allowed me to measure the diameter of the under section of my pop up socket and test.
With an offcut of 38mm worktop, I treated it like it was my final cut to prepare myself.
This meant masking tape the top surface well and while wearing a dust mask, I drilled through the surface.
NOTE: You MUST use a holesaw with a drill bit inside.
Then after almost cutting all the way through (the drill bit showing through is when to tell), then continue from the underside.
Go gentle as it won't take too long. Once you know it fits, it's time to go for gold!

Note:
- In the UK, it shouldn't be closer than 30cm to a sink.
- Make sure you create clearance for the screw section underneath.
- Corner kitchen base units usually have a gap next to the wall, so always measure what's underneath.
Drill until the drill bit pokes through, but take your time and don't press too hard to prevent burning the wood.
Cut the last bit from underneath.
Remove the masking tape and thread the cable through and plug into the main.
While someone holds it in position, ask someone to screw it tight from underneath and now it's ready to use!
When not using, push it down.

I've got enough sockets, shame I think this is great.

We put a large island in our kitchen using kitchen base cabinets. There was an L-shaped countertop in the old kitchen with electric outlets on the back side of the cabinets. The wires for those outlets are inside the island cabinets--waiting for us to decide how to utilize them. The better half wants something like this project--I want them on the side. Not sure who will win this battle but love the tutorial in case that's the direction we choose! Thank you so much for sharing!!

What types of counter top can you drill holes in ? Mind are not laminate. They are quartz’s ( not sure about my spelling ) think it is correct.
Is there any protection for spills on the countertop when it is not in use? Seems like liquid spill would leak? I love the idea!
