Since it is already finished, oil based paint would hold up best. I did ours after taking off what I didn't want painted then used a stencil with spray paint. I then coated with polyeureathane. Still looks like the day we did it - 15 years ago.
My husband and I did this when we were new homeowners. It is a really cool idea. In fact, we had our floors refinished and we asked the workers if we could have a day in between before they sealed the floor so we could put down a stencil. We used a stencil and I used a dark stain on a dry sponge to stencil the hardwood. You want it to be dry so you don't get bleed through. I was sweating though...any mess-ups can't really be fixed unless you re-sand. Then once we were done, the next day the workers came back and sealed the floor. It is beautiful and we still have it in our home today. I didn't do the entire hardwood just special areas. It looks a little like Mogie's second home talk picture.
Since your project is finished already, you would have to go on top of that. Then seal again. However, if you want this more permanent, do it when you are refinishing and have the raw wood available to work with. Good luck! I love the look of stenciled hardwood. It will be beautiful.
Is it hard wood or engineered wood? Is there a glossy finish to it. I just did my bathroom and lightly sanded the engineered wood to give the primer something to grip to. Two coats of primer, then latex then two coats of base color, the stencil then two coats of poly.

Hello I vinyl adhesive stencil might be recommended. Use acrylic paint and seal with polyurethane.
