DIY Disinfectant Spray - 2 Ways

What you will need to make your own disinfectant spray:

High-proof vodka (list of high-proof vodka brands is on our blog HERE.)

It's VERY important to note that you can't just use any vodka off the shelf for this recipe or it won't meet the required percentage of alcohol necessary for disinfecting.

You will also need:

A selection of essential oils

A glass spray bottle

You can also repurpose an old glass bottle from another cleaning product.

A funnel will also be helpful.

For option 2 of this recipe, you will need hydrogen peroxide and a brown spray bottle.

Wash your spray bottle in hot, soapy water and allow it to dry. Then, using a funnel, pour the high-proof vodka into the spray bottle.

Again, please do not just use any vodka for this recipe. More info on our blog about which brands meet the requirements.

Next, you can add a selection of essential oils. Many essential oils have anti-bacterial properties and can aid in disinfection. Although, they're not necessary due to the alcohol content of this spray.

However, if you're interested, you will find links to sources and interesting studies about essential oils and disinfection on our blog. Cinnamon in particular has been well-studied due to its antibacterial properties.

One of our favourite essential oil blends for use in this cleaning spray is our cinnamon based blend.

Cinnamon Spice Cleaning Blend

15 drops cinnamon bark essential oil

10 drops clove essential oil

5 drops orange essential oil

5 drops lemon essential oil

You also have the option of adding a drop or two of natural food colouring to your spray. We find this helps this differentiate our disinfectant spray from our DIY vinegar glass cleaner which is clear. But it serves no purpose other than to remind us which cleaner is which.

Please note: we have never had an issue with staining as the amount of natural food colouring in this recipe is very small.

Please note that the version containing peroxide should not be used on porous surfaces such as granite and marble.
