My Top Tip for Fixing New Door Hinges to an Old Door Frame!
If you have ever hung a new door, or had to change door hinges to a frame where there has been an existing door, you will know how tricky it can be screwing in the hinges when the frame already has pre used holes. Typically the new holes needed for fixing the hinges are not in the exactly same location, meaning secure fastening can be a challenge. It is easier to explain with pictures, scroll down to see!
This is the new door hinge that will need to be hung onto this door surround. You can see the existing holes from where the old door has been removed.
The screw holes don't line up, and you can see that when you screw the new screws in, they won't be a tight fit now. This is because the old screw holes are partially in the way and wouldn't give a tight grip around the new screw.
You need some wooden matchsticks to fill the holes.
Add a little wood glue to the end of the match sticks.
Insert the matchstick in to the existing screw holes and leave them to completely dry.
Snap off the protruding ends of the matchsticks. The area is now good to go for freshly driven screws.
This will give you a firm and secure fixing for the new screws to grip to.
