Hi Margie, I think maybe a bait trap specific for fire ants might be your best bet.

Here are some different methods for fixing your fire ant problem:

In the past & present I have used a product called Terro, available at diy stores in an orange package. It is boric acid and they take it home to the queen(s) and it kills the colony, they love it.

Also you could try DE (Diamatecous earth)-food grade, it destroys their exoskeleton, also at diy stores, get the food grade and dust the top of the soil where they are.

Another method I have used with good results is Jiffy corn muffin mix, it won't kill the queen but will kill the workers. Just open the package and sprinkle it around where the ants are, they take it back to the colony. Best to you.

Sevin granules are okay to be around food.

If you can find mounds, you can mix a scoop from each and they will take care of each other.

The jiffy corn muffin mix is another method (mentioned above).

Do you want to wear Long rubber gloves and carefully dump the veggies out onto a gardening table, while a friend helps pull the plants away to a safe new planter, while you kill the ants with something fast, like Fire Ant granules?

The only thing I will use on fire ants is Amdro. It kills them quickly. It is granuals.
