Oh boy! These are pests!
To start with you or a family member is probably bringing them in on fresh produce that has fruit fly eggs on it, when conditions are right-and that is fairly soon-they hatch into fruit flies.
To help solve this, wash all produce as soon as you get it in the house and refrig it, the exception is bananas, wash and leave at room temp, unless you like darkened bananas. Your sinkdrain now has the eggs in it, so take 1/2 cup baking soda + 1 cup vinegar and put it into the drain, it will fizz, when the fizzing stops rinse well with hot water for awhile. You may want to place a drain cover over it after the hot water rinse.
For the airborne hatch-lings, take a mouse sticky cardboard (you can get a multipack at Walmart for a reasonable price). Take 1 and open it up, peel off the plastic and lay it flat, place a small piece of decaying fruit in the center of it. The fruit flies will be drawn to it, never to fly off and bother you again. Best to you.

Fill a bowl or glass with apple cider vinegar, cover with plastic wrap and a rubber band to seal the edges, and poke tiny holes in the top. The fruit flies will be attracted to the vinegar, but once they're inside, they won't be able to escape the plastic wrap barrier. Mix apple cider vinegar and dish soap

I just put apple cider vinegar and water in equal amounts in an open container, add a squirt of dish detergent and mix. Don't fill the container all the way (no more than 2/3. When it gets murky, pour it down the drain and make a fresh batch. I clean my drains with vinegar, too. Good luck and stay safe!
Hello Paula,
Either eat the fruit or keep in the fridge because when it is ripe it sends out a smell the flies are attracted too. Hope that's of some help!
I have found this to work well in my home; get several disposable containers like bowls or bottles and fill them half full with apple cider vinegar and add a dash of Dawn dish liquid. Cover the containers with plastic wrap and poke holes in plastic with a toothpick. The fruit flies love the scent of the vinegar; the dish liquid coats their wings and along with the plastic prevents them from being able to fly back out of the container. You may empty container down the drain when you see a lot of black dots. Place these containers all over your home wherever you've seen the fruit flies. Hopefully this will help you also.

You can make a fruit fly trap. Cut a plastic bottle about 2/3 of the way up. Remove the screw top lid. Squirt a little dish soap in the bottom, add 2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar, 1 Tbsp sugar, 1/2 cup warm water (dissolve the sugar). Place the top inverted into the bottom. They will fly into the neck to get at the solution but won't be able to escape
Some people say to put vinegar in a cup and put plastic over it with tiny holes punched in it. They go in and can't go out. HOWEVER, I find spraying all my drains in the house with Simple Green gets rid of them. I do this once a week. When I first started it, I did it daily until I saw no more fruit flies. I also put away all fruit in the fridge or under cover like my cake keeper lid. After a week, I saw no more, so now I do it once a week to ALL drains in the home. They will migrate from one to another if you spray it with Simple Green, so be sure to do them all when you spray. I may see one when i bring home fresh fruit, but they never last with my weekly chore of spraying the drains.
Here's a tutorial I wrote that might help you - https://chascrazycreations.com/diy-bug-repellents-traps/
Fill a microwave-safe bowl with apple cider vinegar and a few drops of dish soap. Microwave the bowl so the mixture becomes even more aromatic. Leave the bowl out uncovered as fruit fly bait. The soap will reduce the surface tension, causing any fruit fly that lands on the surface to drown. Now, if what you have might be drain flies...if that is what you have try this: Boil some water on the stove and pour down your drain several times a day for about a week or Mix 1/2 cup salt, 1/2 cup baking soda and 1 cup of vinegar and then pour the mixture down the drain, leaving it overnight. In the morning, pour boiling hot water down the drain.
If a drain fly infestation lasts longer than 20 days despite different approaches to get rid of them, then it’s time to call a professional exterminator.
