Is your linen closet a mess that topples on you every time you need something? Before our daughter was born, our linen closet was not really an area of concern since we only used it when guests stayed with us, so repositioning items here and there was no big deal. However, this space was not only going to be used for guests any more, so I knew it needed some attention to function correctly with all the new baby stuff that was upon us. Here are my 9 tips you should know when organizing and decluttering your linen closet.Let's start with some before photos...

It was a little difficult to get the right angles to see in here without taking a few doors off, but hopefully you can see the disaster zones. Does yours look like this? Let's get to the tips to get it to look more like this...

Tip 1: Decide what needs to be in this closet.

In deciding what should or should not go back in this closet, separate items into piles of:

  • Give away
  • Items that should go elsewhere,
  • I moved items such as our outdoor blankets and beach towels to an area in the garage and found a spot in our guest room to store spare blankets and pillows.
  • Items to keep
  • I kept bedding, pillow cases, towels, and spare guest toiletriesMake note of what items you will need to add that may not already be in the closet (i.e. our new baby stuff)

Tip 2: Sort your linens and toiletries.

Within the piles of items you are going to keep, sort types of towels by size (large towels, wash cloths, hand towels) and color (if applicable... ROYGBIV it). I also sorted my useful versus non-useful toiletries.

Tip 3: Keep most used items at arm level or lower

Think in terms of every day grab-n-go, like towels.

Tip 4: Use space saver bags to make more space

Since I wanted to store my extra blankets and pillows elsewhere, I invested in some space saver bags to make storing these items easier in the guest room closet.

Tip 5: Store sheet sets in their pillow case.

I found this idea while perusing Pinterest and I love it for our king-sized bedding since we change that more often than the queen-sized guest beds. This tip makes grabbing the things you need to make the bed 100 times quicker and easier.

Tip 6: Use bins and boxes to separate items.

Having specific bins or boxes for the various similar-type items will help keep everything organized as you start to use the closet again.

Consider the size for the space. I chose a lower profile wicker basket to house my spare pillow cases as well as the non-king-sized sheets for the guest rooms. The boxes with the lids have all of my decorative pillow covers.

Tip 7: Label your linens.

As we all know, labels are an organizers favorite, but the bigger reason to label is so that everyone else who is using the closet knows what you did. Hopefully then, they will be able to keep it as organized as you leave it. If you are after a quick win like I was, try not to over complicate the label making process with super fancy gadgets. The goal is to mark any bins that you cannot see what's inside.

Tip 8: Line your shelves.I absolutely hate the wire shelving that is in every closet of my home, but I don't have the budget to go crazy changing every single one. Therefore, I chose a quick win lining to help make sure things don't fall through the cracks and to avoid weird wire markings on my towels.Tip 9: Fold your towels appropriately. However you choose to fold your towels, fold them all the same. I have the way I love to fold that my mom taught me on the full blog post linked below if you need a fool-proof method.Your linen closet should not be a source of pain and annoyance, so go for the quick win and get it organized and decluttered today!

I just love your comments about going for the quick win. Those of us who tend to get bogged down in details need that reminder that “Done is better than perfect.”

  • Heck yes!!! Get it done!!! That’s the name of the game!
