How do I help this plant?

I am not sure if these leaves are just a normal thing to have occur or am I doing something wrong. Sure wish it would be a bit fuller; only had it about 4 months and plus side is the new shoot that is coming. Do I just cut off the yellowing shoots/fronds - whatever they are called! ? Am sure I am not calling this out correctly hope you get what I mean! Thanks to all the the Green Thumbs out there ! 
I am not sure you are doing anything wrong...Are you watering it too much or not enough? I see you have great light. What direction are the windows facing? And yes, I cut a yellow frond like that off. I see you have a yellow frond next to the wall also. Looks healthy, otherwise, especially with the new frond coming up. I am guessing that your palm/fern is getting too much sun. I hope someone else can chime in.
Does the plant take direct or indirect light best? Dried tips like that are usually a sign the plants is too dry or the sunlight it is receiving is too strong. Has there been a drop in humidity inside?

Hello. Yes -I like to always cut off any disease or struggling vegetation.
Snip off the yellow fronds. Google the type of plant it is and check your watering/fertilizing schedule.
Looks like over exposure to either heat or sun rays. Can you move it away from the direct sources, that might help. Cut off the yellowing, it will not green up there.
Probably an areca palm - they need high humidity on their leaves - more than usual houses can provide - so putting them over a tray of water, but that they are NOT sitting in the water but on 'feet' over it, helps. DO NOT overwater them & do NOT let them sit in water so their roots get waterlogged -
Giving them a shower once a month in your tub/shower (but don't get the dirt wet, just the fronds) keeps the red spider mites away. When a tip yellows, trim it off - I cut at slants so its less noticeably cut - when a whole sectioned has yellowed cut it off - new shoots do grow - & if you like it just resign yourself to maintenance
Mist them with a fine mister a couple times a day.
If mine gets too much water, and/or direct light...it looks like this. Use a decorative water ball and dont let the sun shine directly on it much, and no dark corners.
I agree: likely it is getting sun-burned. Go to the Dollar Tree and get a pan to place it in. Then but their bags of glass beads or rocks and place on the bottom of the pan. Then place the pam in the pan. Mist your plant at least once a day, shade it from direct sun, also.

This is normal, old leaves wilt and dry out and new leave come, this is how the life cycle evolves. It will eventually have a trunk or thick stem and leaves only on the top. This palm might spring from the bottom too over time. Best wishes.
totally agree with John this is normal all plants loose old leaves; when they begin to yellow and they are old (bottom of leaves towards plant bottom die off first) removing them helps plant send its energy to new growth instead of putting it into maintaining dying palm fronds(leaves).Use very sharp knife or good pruning shears and cut off yellowing fronds.Otherwise your plant looks very healthy happy. Do not transplant for best growth up top leave house plants rootbound. It will grow new palms in pot or bloom easier when left to grow root bound. Give it some palm tree food 1x year in Spring. (even miracle grow water soluble fertilizer works well). The more light the better, chances are it may even bloom ,no direct sunlight but bright as can be.Looks pretty happy where you have it now. There are lots of types of Palm trees this looks like possible Lady Palm, Queen Palm or some type of Parlor palm it is a baby tree no matter what it is. Also water only when it is completely dry,then water well til it runs out of bottom of pot,rinse whole plant off in shower at least 2x a year to keep fronds clean so it can breathe.Palm trees are incredibly hardy/drought tolerant even tropical ones.if you mist your plants try to use filtered or distilled water because reg. tap water will leave spots of mineral deposits on leaves.
