I'm looking for a queen size mattress. We have a bed frame and are currently using an air mattress which we have had for about 20 years. We would like to keep the frame. We are both well into our 80's. What

would you suggest.

Are you asking what type of mattress we have, recommend or what?

Depends on you and what you are looking for.

I get hot when I sleep. So went for a mattress that distributes heat.

Your weight can determine what mattress you choose.

Do you want to buy online or in a brick and mortar store?

Do you want foam, springs or what for the insides of the mattress?

When you say you have a bed frame you want to keep does that mean the headboard, mattress frame or what?

Do you want a mattress that doesn't transfer motion?

Well, thank goodness the extra thick mattresses & springs are on their way out, it makes no sense, unless you are very tall and leggy to get that kind of set where you literally have to climb into bed. We were talked into that mess and ended up taking apart the spring frame to lower it.

Another type of mattress that was problematic for us was a memory foam, some people just love them, you sink into them and can't change position. The one we had trouble with was a Tempur-Pedic.

I hear those Casper mattresses are good,

Take a trip to multiple mattress stores and both of you lay down on different beds and find something you like. Probably a good time to go is now when holidays are coming and stores need to move merchandise.

Go to your local Slumberland store if you have one in your area and test out the mattresses by laying on them to see if you want a soft or firm mattress. I have always had good luck with Simmons. There will be various prices and coil numbers. I prefer the mattresses that don't bounce if your sleeping partner rolls over. Another good place to look is Sam's Club which have nice mattresses for a good price and Costco as well.

If you go to amazon you can compare mattresses but the best part is you can read customer reviews from people that have already bought this and are giving you their first hand opinions. I have changed my mind several times after reading reviews.

Make a list wherever you end up going. Write down what are a must for you.

Like the size of the mattress, how firm you want it, if you want something that eliminates motion, what material it is made out of, if you want a mattress that distributes heat evenly, etc.

Go shopping and try out different mattresses until you find one that is comfortable for both of you.

I am having a hard time believing this is a real post...but, if it is, seek out a small store. Big Box salespeople generally know nothing about construction, the differences in mattresses, and will try to upsell you. Also, never pay full price. A smaller store can negotiate with you on price.

You have been using the same air mattress on your bed for 20 years ?

Wow, that's quite a life span for one air mattress.

  • I would always go for a latex topper, they are so much more comfortable.

I love my pillowtop mattress. We tried out several mattresses at two different stores before finding one my husband and I both liked. They removed our old mattress and box spring and set up the new ones. Good quality is important. Good luck and stay safe!

I see no reason why you couldn't use the same bed frame for a new mattress. Find a store near you and they will deliver the mattress, set up and take off the old one if you want. Goodluck

    Hello Audrey,

Buy a new mattress from a store where you can test it first before you buy. Best wishes

Audrey, Measure your bed frame and then check the mattress size against the frame. All mattress's are standard sizes. Just Google queen mattress's and then look at the length and width. Then check the length and width of your frame.

I would suggest going to a mattress store where you can try out some options for how firm or soft you want the bed to be. Some of the mattress store have a return policy within 100 days if you're not satisfied, ask before you buy or look at their website.

Check your surrounding area for mattress/furniture stores and check the reviews. Then make a few visits and check out the mattresses. The sales associates should be able to help find you exactly what you are looking for. If money is an issue, you can always get a basic mattress and then add a topper to it. When my husband and I first started out, we couldn't afford the best mattress, so we got a basic one, and then bought a 3" memory foam topper and it was amazing!

An air mattress on an old frame with slats?

That doesn’t work, I’ve tried it.

A queen sized “box springs” has been replaced with a “platform” and they’re ridiculously priced.

The cheapest alternative to a platform is a steel tension frame with springs in it at $125 for a queen. It’s cheaper to ditch the bed slats and buy a tension spring frame than buy a new platform.

Presidents Day sales are a good time to haggle. Even the big mattress chains will haggle. Ask for a Senior Discount.

    Hi Audrey,

Call or look on line for a mattress store or supplier. They should sell ALL sizes of mattresses! Good luck!

It would probably be best to talk to someone at an actual mattress store who could make sure all your needs are met.

I'm gonna go with a bed in a box mattress like Casper or Zinseer that gives you a whole year of return if your not satisfied, I just brought a new set this spring for a very pricey price, and the model felt great, but the delivered one was way to hard and its killing my back and hip. I've been looking at the hybrid models that have both springs and foam, but no memory foam for me.
