Patio Table Hack
Have you ever been outside enjoying the beautiful weather, sitting at your patio table, thinking how nice it would be to put your feet up and relax? The table is too high and the rungs between the table legs are too thin to comfortably rest your legs on. Keep reading and we’ll show you how we fixed this problem for us.
When we visit my in-laws, we like to eat our meals out on the deck and enjoy the fresh air and beautiful weather. We like to relax and chat around the table, kicking our feet up. Some of us are shorter than others and our feet do not comfortably rest on the ground. But the metal rungs on the table dig into our heels and ankles. We came up with this quick fix that actually blends in and doesn’t look tacky.
The materials we used were:
•two 6’ sections of 1” diameter pipe insulation (the 1” diameter is the hole down the center)
•a pair of scissors
That’s it. You can find pipe insulation at Home Depot, Lowe’s or your local hardware store.
The first thing we did was measure the rungs. There were four sections. We cut the pipe insulation to size. It already comes pre-slit lengthwise. Then each section had a metal piece in the middle of it, connecting it to the center of the table. We took the scissors and cut a notch in the top side of the pipe insulation allowing it to nest snug around the rung. (As you can see in the photo)
After we had all the pieces in place it was time to test it out. Success!! The pipe insulation stayed snug around the rungs. There was no slippage. If your rungs are larger than ours, you could use zip ties to secure into place.
Within about ten minutes we had a cushioned foot rest and could comfortably chat as long as we liked. No more red lines or bruises on our legs. No more metal rungs digging into our ankles or heels. And my favorite part...they blend in so as not to look obvious or be an eye sore.

This was a cool solution. When I first saw the pictures, I did not immediately see the word pipe. I thought perhaps you had split pool noodles to slip over the ring. Great creativity.
