There is some good information here:
Here's a couple ways
Killing ants in your lawn is tricky business because children and pets use the area for play and traversing the garden. You can try a 3 percent solution of dish soap with water as a spray for an infested area. Other possible treatments include diatomaceous earth or a borax and sugar water spray.
Find the nest and pour boiling water on it. I've also heard vinegar works
I only use Amdro ant killer. It works almost instantly.

Hi! My grandfather would pour boiling water into the ant hill. Very effective. I usually use diatomaceous earth, although outside applications usually have to be repeated more often, since rain will wash it away. Indoors, I treat all the entry points and it lasts all season. Good luck and stay safe!
Hey Nanette: This is what I used for my ant problem, it may work for you, too.
Make a mix of 1/2 baking soda and 1/2 powdered sugar. Mix well and put around the spots they are in your garden, or inside your home, it's harmless to people and pets. For outside use, you can put it in a bottle, like a pill bottle or something like that. Cut a hole on the edge of the cap, and lay the bottle on it's side so the ants can come in and get the mix. This way, it stays dry if it should rain. They will take it back to the nest and it should kill them. I'd keep it out there all season if you can. The mix makes a gas and the ants can't pass gas, so it kills them. Anything else that eats it will just taste the baking soda and say "Yuck" and walk off. It won't hurt anything that can pass gas, so it's completely safe. It helps to know what type of ant you are trying to get rid of, too. Hi Nanette - Those little buggers are relentless, aren't they?!? This is the most effective method and all-natural spray DIY that we use with ants. It's best indoors, but will also work outside with more frequent applications. It's even been featured on Hometalk! Hope this helps! Hugs, Holly

We use Terro, available at diy stores, just follow directions on the package, ants love it and take it home with them to share. Even if you see a parade of ants, just put it in their pathway.
You can mix a scoop of each mound and they will exterminate each other.
I prefer using Sevin granules, you just sprinkle them on the mound and then add a bit of water. They are gone in a matter of hours.
I'd use white vinegar
AMDRO ANT BAIT
