Handyman hung microwave on drywall?

The drywall is more likely attached to studs and not directly to the concrete. You can ask him if he hit studs when he hung it. Since he installed a lot of them I would say he knew what he was doing

Do you know if a mounting bracket/panel came with the microwave? If so, and if the handyman has installed heavy microwaves before, hopefully he used toggle bolts to secure it on to the wall.

As long as it's attached to studs, it should be fine. I agree with William, the dry wall is most likely attached to studs and that's where he attached it.

the Drywall is attached to furring strips which are attached to concrete block. He told me he used plastic drywall anchors to secure the bracket so I don’t think he secured to any studs unfortunately.

My microwave is mounted above my stove with a special bracket that is fastened to the studs. There has to be something holding it in place. You could always ask him. Good luck and stay safe!

If he's a professional, I'm sure he has guidelines he has to follow otherwise he could probably be sued if the microwave fell and hurt someone. You can always call and tell him you're concerned about how it's mounted to the wall and see what he says.

If it isn't anchored into the wall, I think you are going to have an issue. I would call him back out and make sure it is anchored.

Since you have firing strips there is no depth to use toggle bolts which would be the best. Plastic wall anchors will not hold the weight of the microwave over time. What he should have used is an expansion anchor that expands in the wall.

William is correct that plastic anchors are not the same as, and do not have the same holding capacity, as expansion toggle bolts.

If the wall behind is concrete, hopefully he used Tapcon screws and went into the concrete, otherwise it will not stay. If the wall is concrete, there are no studs. You might double check with him on how he installed it just to be sure.

Hi, as long as he was a pro, you shouldn't have any issues, but if you want to add some security for your peace of mind, add some L brackets below the microwave for extra support

Hi there! Even though this post is quite old, I still wanted to share my thoughts. Hanging a microwave on drywall only does seem a bit sketchy, especially since most sources recommend mounting it on a stud. However, if the handyman has installed many microwaves before and it feels sturdy, it's possible that it will be fine. Just keep an eye on it and make sure it stays securely in place. I'm new here, guys, so I thought it would be helpful for you.

Unless it was attached to the studs in the wall or using a mounting frame I wouldn't be happy with this.
