Alternatively, could you try using a very fine grit sandpaper to try taking off just the top layer with the formula. Is the formal stained into the wood or is a drip on top of the wood? If it is stained the clear coat you wouldn't be able to sand it lightly but if it's sitting on top you could.

If mild soap and water didn't do it, try Murphy's Oil Soap.

Saturate with oil to soften and use a plastic scraper to remove.

I have used both toothpaste, with no fluoride, and mayonnaise with great results. If you try the mayo, cover with plastic wrap, leave on for several hours then wipe off with a non scratch scrubber.
