Here's a little inspiration for your warm summer days. While my part of the country is not known for its nautical charms, the people here love to go to the lake to swim, fish or sail. The graceful beauty of the sailboats inspired this rustic sailboat project. Would you like to give it a try? Hop over to the blog for the full tutorial.

Make this rustic sailboat using scrap wood and repurposed chair spindles. I already had plenty of scrap wood available since I can't seem to part with even the smallest piece. That kind of mentality is probably why I also had a barrel of old spindles just waiting for their chance to shine. Waste not, want not!

I attached the spindle to the center of the scrap board for the sailboat mast.

Simple triangles were cut from fabric in my scrap stash. I thought light blue ticking gave the sails a vintage touch. Keeping with the rustic look I hand stitched a simple hem on all sides.

Eye screws on the mast and the ends of the boat was an easy way to secure the sails.

While this sweet little sailboat would make a nice accessory for a child's room, it also has novel appeal for decorating most any room in your home.

The most basic sewing and woodworking skills are all that is necessary to successfully recreate this decorative boat. If you're ready to give it a try, check out the DIY tutorial on the blog.
