Vintage Spice Jars

Even though this was a small project, the transformation was a big one!! I just love how these spice jars look like I scooped them up from an antique booth!

I've been setting these empty jars aside for a few months knowing I would do something with them. Wal-Mart has a large selection of spices with these jars.

The labels pull off easily too.

I removed the labels, washed the jars, and removed the sticky residue left over with a magic eraser.

I then took the jars outside and gave them two coats of spray paint. I decided to use this appliance spray because it's so durable.

I like the glossy look it gives the jars.

I sprayed the lids gold and decided I didn't like that look. Fail

I decided to make them look like galvanized steel instead.

I painted them a matte dark grey using chalk paint.

Once dry I stippled the lids with silver paint.

Much better!

Now that I've figured out this technique I may have to try this out on some other things.

So that's it! I may fill them with spices again and find some cute labels.

Then again I may just display them in my kitchen.

  • Great job on your new milk glass spice jars! Good idea to use the appliance paint to keep the paint from chipping.

When I was a.little boy, 50+ years ago my grandmother had a two tiered red wire/metal spice rack. It held a set of milk glass spice jars with blue lettering and blue caps. You have me plotting how I can reproduce it.
