Storage ideas that 'borrow' space from between the wall studs are floor-space-saving, and do not result in any trip hazards on the stairwell.
You could make open shoe box shelves and fix then to the wall ( one pair stored within box and one pair on top. Make as many as needed. Decorate to suit your decorations (Matching or contrast- light outside and coloured inside)? Fix on wall in a decorative pattern.
