How do I paint an ottoman?

Hi there, your best bet would be to use a dye or paint made specifically for leather. It absorbs into the leather to recolor it and won't scratch off over time. Due to the amount of abrasion the top of the ottoman receives with normal use from feet, I would recommend recovering the ottoman with new fabric instead of trying to paint it. It will be more durable, and have more longevity than paint which will soon be cracking and flaking off.

If it is Leather, then you will need to use a darker leather stain. Messy, but worth it in the end. The Vinyl will need to be painted with a paint for Plastic.

Having said all that, It might be worth you looking at Stretch Covers or a loose cover for this item, then you would be able to ring the changes...

I agree with flipturn. If you will be using this with your feet on it all of the time, yes I think paint would wear. Don't paint the top. For the leather, a leather stain would be your best bet(like John said) and then painting the vinyl part with the same color as the leather stain. The vinyl part won't have feet on it correct? However, that is a lot of work with different materials if you do all that. I would just re-upholster it. Re-upholstering something that size is not that hard.

In re-upholstering, you take off all the fabric, take out your seams, and use the old fabric as pattern pieces. I have a series of posts but you can start with this one on how to remove the fabric:

Hi! Flipturn had it right --- especially since feet are constantly on/off the piece of furniture. You may want to just over the whole thing with a heavy-duty fabric!
