I don't know anyone who uses an old fashioned road map these days. Even stand alone sat navs are not as popular as they were once before, most people seem to use there phones for directions. Road maps also go out of date. However, I do love to craft with the old maps and I craft and upcycle with them regularly. In the past I have made an fall map leaf wreath for my front door. This time I made another map decoration from my door and walls with old road maps.
Luckily for me my family and friends give me their old road maps as they know I love to craft with them. If you don't have any, try thrift shops and junk shops to pick some up.
The other things you will need are a hot glue gun, some buttons, ribbon and rotary cutter.
Using a rottary cutter and mat cut the road maps into strips. The size of the strip you cut will determine the size of the rosettes you make. I made a variety of rosettes in different sizes for this door decoration. The length of paper strip needs to be five times the width. To make a map paper rosette that is 10cm in diameter (5cm radius), you will need 2 stips of map paper 5cm wide and 25cm long. So to make a paper rosette 8cm in diameter, you will need two strips of map paper 4cm wide by 20cm long.
Once the map paper strips are cut. Fold them in a concetena like you would a map. The fold need to be about 1cm in width.
For each rosette you will need 2 strips of map folded paper the same size.
Using the glue gun glue each strip into a semi-circle.
You should end up with two map semi-circles. Again using the hot glue gun glue the two semi-circles together to make a paper rosette. A strip of paper between the circles may help keep them in place, see more details on the blog for this tip.
Finish off each rosette by gluing a button in the middle.
Carry on making the rosettes in different sizes.
Glue a velvet ribbon to the back of each rosette and then hang them in a cluster from your wall or door.
You get a lot of paper with a road map and it actually often work out cheaper than craft paper even when you have to buy your maps from a junk shop. These upcycled road map decorations go really well with the beautiful map roses I made from the same road maps.
