I found this info for you , S.
Vinegar. It disrupts their pheromone trail.
Hello, this has been my goto for a lot of insect problems, it is diatemaceous earth, it is non toxic to humans and pets. Hope it helps you too,
Personally I would use Terro, available at diy stores, it is Borax, they love it and take it home to their colony, it wipes out the queen(s) as well as the workers. We put it in the way of ant parades across our deck and they love it.
Another thought, although I have not tried it is equal parts of baking soda and sugar.
If you can find the nest you can pour boiling water directly into the nest. You may have to do this several times.

Diatomaceous earth is my go to for ants. Aunt Fannies Ant Spray is great for in the house. Carpenter ants are very destructive. If you have a problem with them affecting your house, I would consider a licensed exterminator who guarantees their work. Good luck and stay safe!

Here's some more tips for dealing with carpenter ants
Diatomaceous earth will kill anything with an exoskeleton. It is safe for pets & small children if you get food grade. Effective even if it gets wet.
Hi S. This is what I used for my ant problem, it may work for you, too.
Make a mix of 1/2 baking soda and 1/2 powdered sugar. Mix well and put around the spots they are in your garden, or inside your home, it's harmless to people and pets. For outside use, you can put it in a bottle, like a pill bottle or something like that. Cut a hole on the edge of the cap, and lay the bottle on it's side so the ants can come in and get the mix. This way, it stays dry if it should rain. They will take it back to the nest and it should kill them. I'd keep it out there all season if you can. The mix makes a gas and the ants can't pass gas, so it kills them. Anything else that eats it will just taste the baking soda and say "Yuck" and walk off. It won't hurt anything that can pass gas, so it's completely safe. It helps to know what type of ant you are trying to get rid of, too. cornmeal will kill any kind of ant, we use Jiffy because it is sweet, they grab it up and take it back to the nest and it kills the workers and queen. Any cornmeal or even grits works, but they love the sweet taste of Jiffy. It is inexpensive, safe for pets and kids, and best IT WORKS.
