Will bleach help disinfect the well water?
We are getting ready to have to pull our submersible water well pump and replace it with a new one … I was wondering if pouring a gallon of bleach in the well (down the casing) would help disinfect/clean out the lines from algae or other bacteria/contaminants?

Hello. We have a well too. It provides all our outside water. Every Spring we put 2 gallons of bleach in the well. Then we turn on an outside hose and let it run for an hour. That way all the lines get cleaned too.
Hi this is Peggy. We used bleach in our well after our flood and had it checked by the county board of health for free. Hope this helps you. Search Results

Disinfecting Your Water
You can disinfect your well with household chlorine bleach such as Clorox, Purex or a generic brand. The chlorine in the bleach kills bacteria. Note that it may take more than one chlorination for your well to return a satisfactory test.

I would have my water checked by the Health Dept beforer the pump replacement to see if there is anything growing . Bleach may not be the best additive even if you suspect a contaminant.
Use liquid household bleach containing 5.25% chlorine for the disinfection process. Do not use bleach with a "fresh scent," lemon fragrance, or other cleaners added. One gallon of bleach will treat up to an 8-inch diameter well containing 100 feet of water.
Yes, it will but you will need to make sure and test your water before using it for cooking or to drink. I would get an algaecide specifically for well water. We had it until I was 12 and my dad became a chemical expert, checking daily.
