Best Fly Bait for this type trap?

Does anyone have experience with these? If so, what is the best bait you have found to use? They won't be near the house so smell shouldn't be an issue. Thanks for any input.

  Fingers crossed. I grew up with cattle but I didn't remember as many flies as we seem to have with these. Maybe because ours stayed near the stream which was on the opposite side of the property. These like to hang out near the road. I think they're watching cars go by.

  Thanks, we just added cows to our farm and flies are everywhere. This was something my husband found but not sure what to use to attract them. At least they aren't too close to the house.

A couple of tablespoons of honey, 2 teaspoons of water, and a few drops of honey should attract them.

  I would need something solid for this type of trap. I use something similar for fruit flies indoors and add a drop of dish detergent so that it catches them.

Have never seen these before either, let us know how well they work. I would think manure nearby would attract the flies.

  Yes, that is the issue. We have recently added cattle to our farm. I read decaying meat or feces is the best to attract them but I'm thinking I don't want to put manure in the trap. Maybe a refrigerator clean out?

  I may add that to meat rather than water. I'm sure it'll draw them and you are supposed to keep it wet. Thanks for the idea.

I found the stinkier the better when it comes to catching flies. I use a small piece of chicken.

I put in a small amt of sugar, and dry cat food and they come to it every time

  I would never have thought of that. I like that idea more than rotting meat or manure. Bonus, we have a cat so that's on hand.

  I have used wet cat food that was left in my cat bowl too you just need a small amount and make sugar water and it will draw flies, gnats and all kinds of bugs

I don't know how your cows would feel about it, but we've found that flies hate basil, lemongrass, lavender, particularly if planted in groups. It would also be interesting to make a "tea" from these and spray it on the manure' to confuse the flies.
Flies are drawn to rotting meat, so the use of chicken is a great idea.

  That's a neat idea. I have lavender all through the house because of stinkbugs. We used to have thousands of them in the spring but that has help keep them at bay. I might want to try that near the house, just in case they start migrating away from the fields. Thanks!

  Hi, Kathy,
  I found a solution for stink bugs that works for my home-wash your exterior window sills and framing with very warm water into which you've added a few drops of original Dawn dish liquid. Stir vigorously to make a lot of soap suds. Evidently, the stink bugs hate the taste/smell and stay away! If your home is vinyl sided, I'd try using a lemon dish detergent that does not have a grease cutting agent
  ( grease cutter not advised for use on some brands of vinyl siding).
  The lemon detergent used on siding also prevented flies from congregating...must be the smell. Since putting numerous pots of basil, lemon grass, etc. around, we've had no fly or mosquito problems (knock on wood!).

  Yes, I have found they do not like citrus scents either. Also, I have a spray bottle of Dawn soapy water and that gets them too. Neither do ladybugs, which is another little pest that is dropped by the thousands for the crops. I wipe down with OrangeGlo on my wood and they hate it. I never thought of washing the outside with soapy detergent water. We have wooden siding so I think I will be good to go with that. Although I may buy some lemon detergent for the scent. Unfortunately, I travel during the week and am not at the farm so plants isn't an option. My husband would NEVER think to water them, which is a necessity here in the summer. Thanks for the tips.

  Hi, Kathy,
  I found that planting into a mix of composted manure, vermiculite (to hold water) and a little perlite, topped off (after planting) with a 3-4" layer of mulch markedly reduced my watering to 1x/week. I don't know your climate, but lavender and sages really do well in drought conditions ( it's been in the 90's here). Even my basil has required less frequent watering.

  Thanks for the research, I haven't checked the height to hang them. Since this is my husband's idea, I guessed he had but this is good to know in case he didn't. I was thinking of hanging off shepherd's hooks and I think that will be the right height.

  Well, we can't hang them at the recommended height. The cattle knocked them over and trampled. We are changing to hanging from a tree and hoping that they will still work. Definitely not effective laying on the ground.
