What color should i paint the house

Cute pups! Your colors sound fine, except I have seen so many houses painted a dark color with aluminum siding and then fading uneven. Of course I don't know what prep they had done or what paint they used. You said the paint is peeling. That usually indicates poor adhesion. Are you painting it yourself or having it professionally done? I would at a minimum, power wash (hopefully removing the old peeling paint). There may need to be sanding and scraping done on a good portion of it. Do some research and talk to some knowledgeable painters. If it was a piece of aluminum furniture, I would strip it down, sand, scrape, clean it to bare metal, prime and paint. My point being that prep is everything, no matter what you are getting ready to paint. A house is big, expensive paint job, so I wish you success! I love your yellow door and think it's a great pop of color. I have a yellow mailbox and love it. I usually stick with three colors outside, so it isn't too busy. Anyway, good luck and stay safe!

Navy with yellow would be beautiful. I always worry about saturated colors fading. I have a red door but it took 15 years before the fading was noticeable.

Navy paint will need to be repainted sooner than a lighter color. I would maybe consider a light gray and then use navy for the shutters.

You can upload a picture online and use a "virtual house painter tool" to try out different colors. I really liked the Pittsburgh Paint 10-02 "Sorcerer's Spell". It reads as a heavier color but not dark, which is what too many "dark blue's" are. It feels rich, not light-sucking. Bright white trim and your fabulous yellow door! Consider also painting the screen door the same yellow so it's always visible. I'd love to see natural wood shutters (if you can afford them) or paint your current shutters to look as though they're wood (there are tutorials on this site to do that). If you build new ones, I'd make them at least as wide as the side lites of glass in the triple window. You could even beef up the trim around the windows to make them look more Craftsman style.

The awning and railings - oh my! This could be just a paint job or you can spend a bit of money and time (if you have some skills), hire, or barter with someone to change things out. If leaving the roof section, I'd paint it to match the roof of the house (which I can't see in the picture but it's probably a gray shingle???) Seriously consider adding some wood to box in the metal posts down to the concrete steps. Replace the railing with stained wood. Power wash the steps and walkway, use a spade or edger and cut in along the walkway.

Pull the flower beds out to at least as far as the concrete step meeting the walkway. Clean everything out, dig out any sod, weeds, etc. and add some garden soil. Design on paper what you plan to do - remember always how large everything will grow. Don't put a tree that gets gigantic right in front of the house!

You can 'anchor' the bed & house with some taller, slender evergreens or small decorative trees like weeping cherry. Choose perennials that are for your growing zone and exposure - this saves money as they return every year. Install edging so the grass stays in the grass lol! Cover the planting bed with mulch yearly and the house will POP!

Proper prep of EVERYTHING is essential! Power wash the house and wire brush any loose paint. Sand the edges of the chips smooth. Use a primer that is a "DTM" paint, "direct to metal". If you don't use this on your aluminum siding you will pay for that mistake forever! Same with the paint. The wood trim is a different story, you don't need DTM for that so save your money.

I like your idea of navy for the house! I think white shutters would look best because with white on both the window frame and shutters your windows would look bigger and the shutters not so skimpy. Doing them in yellow might be a bit too much and actually detract from the charm of the door. Adding your yellow to the screen door sounds like a great idea though...when you have a cheerful color you love on your door it is nice to have it readily visible! I think personally I would paint the awning solid white as well. And the lady who suggested beefing up the supports is so right. If you can afford that on top of a paint job it would be the most dramatic change!

I love a black or navy door. I also love the color we used on our house! It's Sherwin Williams Duration RARE GREY. We used Casa Blanca for the trim. That color Rare Grey would look amazing with black shutters. If you need a darker color to go with it all.....Thunderous was the color we used for our Gable. Definitely check out those color chips!!!

Color is a personal choice. However, some colors will sun fade easier than others.

Hello with that roof color I think a beige tone might be nice. Are you considering replacing the roof soon your siding color choice may need to complement that.

Your personal taste/ decor style might dictate your choice. Some folks like bold colors some neutral.

I personally find browsing awesome visuals on Houzz or Pinterest web sites to help collect some ideas to consider/ exclude others in aspects of color choice and styles for decorating and refurb applications.

You might want to consider browsing over at these sites utilizing key word searches customized to your specific needs or interest.

Because your home is sided, think about how much insulation you have, prior to painting your home a darker color, which can absorb more heat.

I have seen a VERY dark (almost Navy) home with white trim and it was quite striking. Not sure if I'd do the yellow in shutters, perhaps just the door, with white shutters. Your neighbors may not love you. :)

Be careful with navy blue, it can turn purple as well as some grays. I would not use Navy as the main color. I would use it on the shutters, and front door. I would paint the main house white or light gray white.

I agree with those that have said navy can fade and do all sorts of goofy things. I'd paint it white, keep the door yellow, shutters navy and put your effort into landscaping in front of the windows. Maybe some window boxes for a pop of color. You have a lot of options. Good luck.

We went with a dark green with white trim on our place. Love how it makes the house look so much richer and how it stands out from the other houses around us. I call the color a deep marijuana green.

I think I light grayish blue color with white shutters and the yellow door would be gorgeous.

I love that you have so much advice. Here's mine.

First invest in a pint of each color you are thinking of using. Paint a whole large poster board each color and put them on your steps or somewhere you can see them from the street and walk backwards looking at how the colors seem with each other. Be sure to close your front door so you can see that color also. I don't like more than 3 colors on a house. I would use your beautiful door color blended with white, brown or orange.--just a touch so the colors are different but not striking. You could use your full strength door color as a accent. If you paint the ceiling of your porch entrance a pure yellow, your porch will seem to glow when light hits it-even with a porch light. Depending on how much effort you want to put in this project you could paint the shutters one of the colors you pick and paint the trim on them another one of the colors you picked.

You can go to the paint center in Lowes etc and look at the paint test strips they have. Take some home and put them somewhere you walk by them often and see how you feel about them a few days later.

What we like in small doses we may not like in large.
