I was given a very nice and heavy duty changing table from a friend and had to figure out what to do with it. I wanted to transform it into something cool so I came up with the idea of a kitchen utility cabinet!

Before

Here is what it looked like before. I started by removing all of the outdated hardware and knobs and filled in the holes.

Sanding and Prep

This piece had a fairly smooth finish so I used an orbital sander to scuff up the surface a bit. I also filled and sanded any scratches or dents that I didn't want to show through on the final product. I planned on lightly distressing it so a few little knicks didn't bother me but the big obnoxious ones had to go.

Tack Rag

One of my secret weapons when painting furniture is a tack rag! They are sticky little rags that remove any leftover particles of dirt or dust after cleaning. This step really helps you get a nice smooth and even finish when painting, especially when using a sprayer.

Painting

For this project I used my HVLP sprayer. I always use a cone filter as well to help get any little particles or clumps from getting into the sprayer. I like to do several light coats and I always wait until the paint is dry to spray another coat.

Getting a great finish

White can be difficult to paint (at least for me) so I usually end up applying more coats. I had a couple little areas of bleed through so I sprayed those with shellac and painted over them again once the shellac was completely dry. Before I spray my clear coat of water-based polyurethane, I like to give the entire piece a light sanding with a really fine grit sand paper or sanding sponge. This makes the paint finish super smooth and soft to the touch!

Hardware

Next I added some black cup pulls to the drawers for a farmhouse vibe.

Casters

I also added some casters to the bottom. The legs were not wide enough to screw the casters onto so I added some blocking to get a bigger surface. ***SPOILER ALERT*** These casters ended up NOT working. I had them on hand already and even though they said "light duty", I thought I'd try them out. Pro tip: invest in the heavy duty casters if your piece is a beast like this one!! 😂😂😂 Lesson learned!

Towel Rack

I thought it would be super handy to add a towel rack and I found this awesome black pipe one on Amazon! It totally brings the whole project together!

All done!

This piece is so handy and versatile and I just love the way it turned out!
