I have a gas fireplace with stone surround. I built a shelf and a box under that. A 2x4 was screwed to the wall studs and the mantle was slipped over the 2x4 and fastened with a couple of screws.

If your mortar is old and not strong then you’ll need to drill holes in the brick and those drill bits and accompanying “mollies” are required.
