You can get a wall paper that is designed to cover the grooves. They have texture and will even hide the grout gaps in cider block walls. Then the wall can be painted and look like a normal wall. It worked for me in a rental house that had damaged walls that I didn't want to spend a lot of time and money restoring the walls.

I have painted this very kind of paneling. First use liquid sandpaper (found at any building supply, paint, or hardware store). Follow the directions on the liquid sandpaper and use a liberal amount. This makes the surface of the paneling tacky and helps the primer to bond and stick. Buy primer that is made for slick surfaces or says that it will adhere to any surface. This is really important. Do not skimp and buy cheap primer. The primer is crucial to getting good adhesion for your paint to not peel off the paneling. Then follow with the paint of your choice.
