Ghost Hurricane Shade-DIY

The basic steps for this hurricane shade are much like the steps used for my Snowman Hurricane Shade. Quick and simple, it can also be completed in about an hour.

Thoroughly clean the fixture using window cleaner and a paper towel.

Wet a sponge and wring it out so that it’s damp, but not dripping. Pour white acrylic enamel paint onto a paper plate. Place your hand inside the fixture to hold it. Dip the sponge into the paint and dab it on the glass. Repeat until the entire outer surface of the fixture is covered. Carefully stand the shade on your work surface and dab the top. Allow the paint to dry.

Make your face stencil. Trace eyes and nose onto a scrap of card stock and cut out using a craft knife. Note: Size and shape will depend on your fixture and personal preference.

Hold the stencil on the side of the fixture. The top of the eyes on mine were 1 1/4" from the top edge of the fixture, but you may need to adjust according to your own fixture and stencil size.

Using black acrylic paint and a stencil brush, pounce over the eye and nose openings to transfer the face to your ghost. Allow the paint to dry.

Dip the pointed tip of a wooden skewer in the white acrylic paint. Draw commas on each eye and a dash on the nose for highlights. Allow the paint to dry.

Cut a 1/2" x 18" strip of black lace and an 18" strand of raffia. Holding them together, wind them around the top of the ghost and tie in a knot. Trim the ends as desired. Cut another strip of lace. Wrap the lace around four fingers and slide off your hand. Pinch the center together and place over the knot of the tied lace at the top of the ghost. Bring the ends of the tied lace up and around the pinched center of the wrapped lace and tie in a knot to secure. Cut open the ends of the wrapped lace if desired.

Insert and light a tea candle in a glass votive holder. Place the ghost hurricane shade over the candle. The candlelight will shine through the ghost's body.
