Deck help needed.

Scrape the paint off with a very stiff broom or scraping tool. Lightly sand, then prime if needed before painting, using a paint designed for decks in your climate.

To expedite the work, you might rent a powered oscillating sander.

Paint peels because it is not absorbed into the deck it just sits on top of the wood. Stain on the other hand is absorbed into the wood. So if you paint your deck you will have the same problem and if you stain it not as much upkeep.

You can use a paint remover or sand it off. A lot of people like Critistrip paint remover because it's less toxic, but for a deck you'll need a lot. Be sure to follow all of the directions and it might take more than one application. If you use a sander, start with a lower grit then smooth with a higher grit or scrape it off.

Hi Joye if a pressure washer isn't cutting it you might want to consider renting a sandblaster.

I think you will need to sand it in order to get it prepped correctly. That will take longer than power washing but even power washing won't properly prep it.
