I have a home that someone has put new floor joists in and around the house the knocked the brick out so what should be a crawl space is open. What can I do to seal it off?

Hi James, any chance you could post a photo? Do you mean they left venting holes open?

I can post pics tomorrow. I wish it was just vent holes. I’ll take pics as soon as I can

That would be good. I am having a hard time visualizing. We did a partial joist replacement on a previous home, just because the builder never put vents in!

Is the home on a crawl space rather than on a basement?

Are the new floor joists supporting the main floor?

Where exactly is the brick that has been knocked out?

If it doesn't need to be accessed any longer, you can put new brick in the area but don't do it solid, leave openings for ventilation. If it does need access, maybe go with a metal gate style.

This sounds dangerous, both structurally and for “critters” taking residence in your home.

Why can’t you make the people who did this restore it to a safe condition?

Replacing floor joists is major construction. This is disconcerting to me.

Did this home pass a home inspection prior to purchase?

You might want to check and see what your local area requires.

  • I would not recommend a DIY fix here as there are a lot of issues at hand. If done incorrectly, a lot of damage could be caused. I’d say get a contractor in to take a look.

You may have to call a contractor to come in and give you a cost to fix. I personally would not try and do DIY. Search YouTube you may find ideas on what it entails to fix. I know there are companies out there that do repair situations such as yours. Good luck.

Hi James, do you have the brick they took out? How about you pick up one in about the same color as the one removed and set it in then foam what is not filled. Hope this helps

You could rebuild the sidewall of under your house using brick or another material. If you frame the areas in and cover the opening with wood, you could camouflage the different material with lattice. It sounds like it's not structural, but, rather problematic, keeping out critters and weather. Make sure you still have access to the crawl space for any future issues. You may want a screened vent for air circulation so it doesn't get damp and musty. Good luck and stay safe!
