I found an old, vintage dairy bucket several years ago. It has been sitting around collecting dust, waiting for me to find its purpose. Then we bought a plant that needed a home and that is when the idea struck me that the bucket could be turned into a planter. Keep reading to find out what we did!
First, gather your materials.
•metal bucket
•drill with desired bit
•potting soil
•plant
•crushed water bottles
The next step is to drill holes in the bottom of the bucket and a few on the sides near the bottom. These are the drainage holes.
Now that the holes are drilled you can determine if they are large enough or if you’ll need more.
This was a larger bucket. To keep the drainage working, we placed crushed water bottles and a few cans in the bottom of the bucket. Thus helps keep the bucket from being to heavy to move.
We used miracle grow potting soil. There are a lot of potting soil options out there, or if you make your own soul, do what feels Best.
We filled the bottom half of the bucket full of soil. The we placed the plant in the bucket next, making sure to break up the roots. Breaking up the roots helps the plant to grow and thrive in its new home. It’s like waking them up from a nap. Then we topped off the soil to the top of the bucket.
And this is how she looks. A happy snake plant in its new home. I’m so glad we decided to use this bucket as a planter. I’m even more glad we bought this snake plant when we saw it on sale. The project didn’t cost much since we had potting soil at home and the bucket just laying around. Repurposing old things into new things is one of our favorite things to do.

I use pieces of styrofoam packing in the bottoms of large pots to use less soil and lighten them
We’ve used those too when we’ve had them available. 😍
Great idea! I’ve been using cut up pool noodles in the bottom of my containers. Great drainage and easy to move!

Have a question about this project?
WILL IT RUST IN THE RAIN
No. I am moving it under my porch and then inside during the winter months. But this bucket has been sitting outside for decades.
