Bar Top Deck Railing With the Last Piece of Grandpa’s Oak
Bar top deck railing. I’ve been seeing this idea all over the internet the past year and it occurred to me that its definitely something we would get a ton of use out of! Since I started the renovation in 2014 I’ve been hacking away at using all of the wood leftover in the barn from when my Grandparents’ were wood workers. Besides random stashed wood there was one very special, very hidden, pile that I spotted right away: VERY old, rough cut oak and pine that was simply gorgeous.
All that was left was to give the oak a power wash and wait for it to dry. I don’t always soak wood before I sand it down but because this is oak I wanted the grains to all stand up as much as possible. Oak is a little like sanding concrete!
I’m planning on sealing it with something eventually but, because this is MN and we have such a harsh climate, I feel like my only option would be using an epoxy pour of some kind… that’s something I’m going to contemplate about for a bit.

Absolutely beautiful place and view. Sorry, but I'm so jealous. I'm also thankful to Joan Saner Harder. I kept going back looking at the barn, but couldn't figure out the roof on the barn until I just gave up trying to figure it out. lol I understand now and I wouldn't change anything.

Hi Em, the barn definitely looks so odd its a little mind bending. We've joked that it looked like the Star Wars death star after it got hit... or like a partial moon in a way. Thanks for coming by :)

Hi Eliza, I'm sorry a rug was not used in this project. I used shelf brackets and a piece of oak to make the bar.
Have a question about this project?
Yes, your idea is wonderful, BUT I have a question about the building in the back ground. Perhaps a barn?? What is it I see on the roof line??? I am so curious!!!!! Why is it in peaks?
Do the epoxy pour. It takes some bravery to start it but mine turned out great. I used it on kitchen countertops and they are BEAUTIFUL.
I have a very long deck. I don’t like wood railings. Block my beautiful view of Gulf of Mexico! Does your metal rope looking things rust? Any ideas what to use that won’t rust?
Hi there, as far as I know these cable rails won't rust. I used steel conduit here before for a couple of years and had no problems with that rusting either. I also made my rails extra high (four feet) so, when sitting, the view is not obstructed at all. We absolutely love our cable rails because its almost like they're not even there.
