I would advise you to first check with your municipality/county as to what the bylaws are surrounding having a firepit on your property.
Many localities no longer permit them, simply due to a fire prevention considerations, and existing drought conditions.
Hi! I would cut a space in the lawn, outline the outside with brick or stone and put metal mesh or a grill over the top. You have a fire pit. The metal will get hot, so keep a safe distance. Good luck and stay safe!

Yes it can be heavy, You could use a small shovel and pail
You might want to check with a fireman, when some metals heat up they can explode out metal sharp shards. JustMe ☺
