I chose gray, red, black & white colors for my new apt. what do you think? Is that too much going on? I love red and black together...but thats so dark, I thought adding the gray and white would brighten things up. And red (its a dark red) would add pops of color throughout the apartment...like throw pillows, just accents around the apartment.

Choose colors combinations that you are drawn towards, and not colors that you do not like, even if others try to persuade you otherwise.

If your preferences change, remember that it is easier and less expensive to switch colors of smaller areas or items, rather than walls or larger pieces of furniture.

If you are just starting to decorate, I would suggest that you go with light neutral colors on the walls and floors, darker or medium solid shades with larger pieces of furniture, and brighter colors and patterns with accessories and wall art.

Hi NeeNee, it's your apartment and should showcase your personality, not whatever is trending at the moment. Red, blacks and greys are all lovely colors and compliment each other beautifully, so go for it.

I love all those colors together...they will look great. What I would suggest though is if you have one of the main colors being red, then only use a small amount of black for POP. And vice versa. If you have a main color of black then only use a small amount of red for POP. The other greys and whites are neutrals and don't matter how much you use of them. But when you have very strong colors like red and black If you use too much of both, it can overwhelm a room. Sounds nice....good luck!

Yes, make sure you add plenty of white to the space using the red and black more as accents.

I think Im keeping all of the walls white. Im an artist and I like the crisp white walls as a background for more colorful pieces of art. Thank you Chloe!! :)

An accent wall of gray would be nice, just 1 wall, the rest of the walls in white and ceiling in white. Use the black and red to add to your color scheme, that way you can control rather then overwhelm.

In our house in a small entryway I painted it light gray and had red as an accent wall...horrible idea, it looked like a CSI crime scene. After 1 week of trying to get used to that, I painted over the red with a deeper shade of gray, much better.

Your hallway sounds like it turned out nice, great idea with adding the darker gray! Thank you so much for your reply~~ :)

  • It depends on your taste, but the nice thing about it is, having the neutrals, you can change your 'pop' of color to anything you want, like pink, orange, purple, lavender, etc.

Hello. Lighter color walls for background should be a nice showcase for these colors.

    Hi NeeNee,

Grey Walls, White paintwork ,Red Rug and black Lamps with red, Black Grey and white cushions, maybe. It would give you a Contemporary look!

If you keep the "RED" confined to accessories and throw pillows, you could replace the red at times with a bright yellow, a teal, or a coral, to do a quick change. Your basic white, grey and black is a good base for oh so many other ideas!

I hadnt thought of that!! Now I cant wait to try with different colors! Teal would look great~~ Thanks Janice

If you kept red for just accents and small pops of color, I think it could be great!

  • I would paint the walls the neutral colors and then have red and black as accents through knick knacks, throw pillows, etc.

Hi Nee Nee, I think it sounds wonderful. Try it and see you can always tone it down later if you don't like it. Have fun with your new apartment.

I love high contrast so this idea sounds wonderful to me. You can bring the red in as an accent color in things like throw pillows, poofs, art work, etc. A little yellow would look nice and compliment the red also.

As long a the walls are very light I think it will work. And don't hesitate to add just a very few warmer colors in art work and accessories.
