in this room we did it higher than a chair rail - a plate rail. But in our basement bath we did a chair rail

Yes, we did this in our old house and loved it. Everyone would comment. It’s very easy to do.

Yes we did it in our dining room right at chair rail level. I can take a picture for you if you want it. I think hubby did an amazing job and yes it was pretty cheap to do. The thing that makes it amazing if you have the time an energy......do a skim coat of spackle between the vertical boards and sand it super smooth. This would be a skim coat all along the lower half on the faux wainscoting. That way it doesn't look like a wall that has just been painted. It actually looks like a panel of wood that has been sanded down just like the vertical boards. Then when you paint it with molding paint (use a semigloss), The entire wainscoting doesn't look like it is a pitted wall. This is the trick that so many people don't think about but it is really the key to make the faux wainscoting look different from the wall that is above the chair rail. Hi! My son-in-law installed some and it's beautiful! He used liquid nails and also nailed them in place to make sure they stayed in place. Good luck and stay safe!

It looks absolutely beautiful when done. We used a nail gun and Loctite glue.

Actually our walls are very lightly textured so we did not do anything but paint. You could use premixed drywall mud that you roll on with a roller. Get the kind that does not need much sanding. I used that on my bathroom walls and it came out great. Once you put the wainscoting up you probably will not notice the walls. Be sure to use caulk to hide any spacing between molding and walls.
