How to fix oak veneer?

I bought a dresser that had contact paper on the top and when I pulled it off discovered that part of the oak veneer top was missing on one end. They had filled it in with drywall mud to level it out. I've stripped it down and have about a 12"x12" piece of veneer missing. I would love to leave it natural if it isn't too hard to fill in a piece.

I love grandmashousediy's idea of painting the top and staining the rest of the piece. When dealing with a lot of peeling veneer, it might be better to take off all the veneer and then paint. If it is a tiny missing piece of veneer, you could use Bondo for a particular spot. Use my post to decide what to do and how to do it easily. Check out my Hometalk post:

How to Remove Wood Veneer Easier!!
Hi! Generally, I remove the veneer. Before I had a steamer, I used to fill a bucket with really hot water, soak rags in the water, wring them out, and spread over the veneer. Sometimes (especially on old pieces) the wood is nice under the veneer but, it isn't always. You can always paint the exposed wood, put new veneer over it, or use a gel stain on, which more opaque than regular stain. If you patch the veneer, you may or may not be able to match it. If you paint over the veneer, it may continue to lift the old veneer. Personally, I would remove it. Good luck and stay safe!

Thanks All! I think I will try and remove it and see what it looks like, if good then paint or might try applying a whole new veneer over the stripped off area. Thanks for all the suggestions!

You will have to purchase a new piece of veneer. I'd remove the whole top and replace for a seamless look
Hello. It is very difficult to repair veneer and have a perfectly appealing result even with artistic abilities. I suggest painting or recovering the surface.

Pull the rest of the veneer off and there will be beautiful wood under it then you could finish it the way you want
