Bowling ball ready for makeover

I cannot get my metal gazing ball to stay on its stand, it is too light. I had a great idea that an old bowling ball might just be what I need to make a gazing ball heavy enough to withstand our winds. A local bowling alley was changing out the balls and kindly gave me a couple.

Scuff sand the bowling ball

The bowling ball was scrubbed then sanded to roughen up the surface a wee bit for paint to stick.

Spray paint

Using Rustoleum spray paint in mirror effect, a metallic silver I sprayed multiple light coats in a well ventilated area. I have the video of this process on the blog tutorial linked at the bottom of this post if you would like to see how. Here are more spray paint project tutorials as well.

The reflective properties are not as shiny as my metal gazing ball. This above photo is in April and below is the same ball at the end of August and it has not blown away :). I think next spring I will add a fresh coat and see if it builds up more shine.

New heavy gazing ball

It is not quite as shiny but it is still in place... bonus ;)
