How to clean galvanized pipes without removing them?

I live in an old house that has galvanized pipes connected to our toilets. I am unable to access these pipes yet the build up in them is getting bad and I would like to clean them. Does anyone know what I can do to clean them as everything I see online requires physical access to the pipes, which I don't have?

Hi Kenneth, from what I have read it is very difficult to do that. Have you called a plumber to see what your options are?

Galvanized piping tends to be thin. The build up could also be a result of a crack in the piping. Your best option would be to call at least 3 qualified plumbers to get bids on replacing this galvanized piping with PEX ,PVC (as approved for use in your area), or copper. As you have no access to the piping, it would be prudent to act on this before you incur a leak inside your wall.

Hi Kenneth, I would try something like The Works Toilet Bowl Cleaner - it does a good job on calcium build up. There's a chance the build up is just caused by years of sweating. Steel wool and a good cleaner might really help improve the look of them.

CLR can help remove rust and mineral build up. A nylon brush can help agitate. Emery cloth can help polish the pipes. IF possible, I'd eliminate the pipes and replace with new material.

  • You need to buy an alkaline based cleaner from a hardware store.

I am not sure if you mean the build up is on the outside of the pipes or the inside.
