How do I get a sumptuous guest suite with striped ticking bed linens ?

Southern BelleChloe CrabtreeKmdreamer

We are redoing our daughter’s room into another guest suite since her marriage in June. I just watched the wonderful interview with Lory and went to all her decorating buddies’ sites Lory joined with for an online session, so I’m thinking a lovely, restful room.

Here’s the issue: we have an Ethan Allen cherry bedroom set in there, so my decor has to deal with the dark colors of that. My husband would have another heart attack if I even suggested painting! Can’t have that!

It’s our old master suite, so it’s bigger than a typical child’s room with a long window seat under a short 48” wide window. It has a sky light over the bed, so it’s full of lovely light. Two walls are slanted, one on which the bed sits under the sky light and the opposite wall. I’m thinking I will paint the walls a soft/light tan and then using texturized paint use a lovely damask-like symbol stencil on the short walls in white or offwhite.

I’m interested in using lovely, inviting fabrics for the bed linens, window, and window seat The fabrics will make or break the feel I’m going for, I think. I already have all white bed linens in our suite and another guest suite, so I’m wanting to do something different here, but still inviting and lush. It’s Central Florida, so white/light colors are appropriate year round.

Help! I would send a picture, but I’m still tossing, giving or throwing away the things my daughter didn’t take with her and that I wasn’t able to pawn off on our young granddaughters who are using the same colors she used in their new home’s bedrooms.

From the doorway’s entrance on the far right of the wall from the hall upstairs, you walk in to see the window and window seat straight ahead on a full wall. The bed is to the left, centered on the slanted wall under the sky light. On the right wall is a tall chest of drawers and a TV cabinet in the corner on the slanted wall. To the immediate left is my mother’s enormous, but gorgeous, highboy on a full wall and right to its left is the hallway into the walk-in closet on the left and the bathroom straight ahead. I know that’s a lot of furniture, but my hubby surprised me with new bedroom furniture for our bedroom for Mother’s Day, so we are overflowing with furniture!

i appreciate your time and your thoughts.

I would look through pinterest, through decorating magazines etc to find what you are looking to achieve. It is hard for us to direct you without seeing photos of the room, etc. it is all your personal preference.

Hi Teresa, it sounds like a beautiful room! I always love rooms with slanted walls and window seats... lots of character and charm. I love the idea of the blue and white ticking. It is classic and yet isn't too light and airy for the weight of the bedroom set. You could use a light, smoky blue and white as your colour scheme and do variations for the bedding, window seat cushion and other accessories. I think I would go with a cream or white (soft white) for the walls personally. That will lighten up the feel of the room and balance out the darkness of the dark wood. Have fun redecorating!

You are most welcome! The toile set sounds beautiful and would definitely go with the class look of the bed suite. I hear you though that having things shipped is hard. It can take so long and can be soo expensive. It sounds like a beautiful choice though :)

The room sounds fabulous. (Of course, I would paint the furniture.). Why not go with a soft coastal blue color?

Buy new or used (Ebay) Stripe linen to finish off the look! Maybe a rug or piece of art or sculpture to tie it all together.

  • I think you're's going to be all about the fabrics. I would choose a mix of patterns that catch your eye and layer them on the bed, the windows, the window seat, etc. And I think I might go very light with them all and then add the pops of color with pillows! I think the contrast with the dark wood would be fabulous. Sounds lovely!!

Check Macy’s online for bedding for great pricing and go with something light and no pattern, texture is okay. You might want to consider using damask paper and painting it rather than texture on the walls. If you change your style later it will be easier to change v

Striped ticking bedding with a couple of decorative white pillows on the bed would look lovely. You can always go with painting the walls a nice white to make it especially bright and cheery. Where do you live? I am in Celebration!
