I rarely use wax over a stencil. Is it on furniture or a wall? Nothing over one on a wall. Even with chalk paint, I prefer a clear drying water based sealer over a stencil on furniture. I like Van's wax for the rare occasions I use it. Good luck and stay safe!
Hi Dana, I have never used wax over a stencil, is it in a high traffic area? But hope this link helps you out,

This might be what you are asking about:

Hello. Could you give us more details or photographs of your project to have a better idea of what you’re trying to seal. I have done wall stenciling and never sealed it. So I’m not too sure what situation you are tackling.
Hi Dana, I am assuming you are stenciling a piece of furniture. Wall stenciling wouldn't get sealer or wax.
tinted dark wax on furniture will change the color of the area that you stenciled. Just to let you know. If you are trying to antique then this might be a good option. However I use other ways to antique that I like better, ie: glazing.
But as for sealing, I would seal it with something else like general finishes or polycrylic sealers.
Wax will eventually wear off and you will have to do it again. It's not a sealing product that I would recommend especially if you are trying to really protect the area that you stenciled. I am also assuming you used chalk paint for the entire piece. Chalk paint pairs with wax.
If you used other paint, I wouldn't use wax unless the tinted wax was giving me the best antique effect that I couldn't get with glaze.
Any extra specifics of your project would be helpful! Good luck!

It's hard to give a good answer as you haven't specified what you've stenciled onto but if it's a floor or furniture, I'd recommend a water based polyurethane rather than wax.
Definitely use a polyeureathane instead of wax. Wax doesn't really hold up.
What kind of paint did you use? I know chalk paint is popular and here is how to apply wax after using it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-UYus0Pi5Y
Hello. I prefer a paint on sealer to a wax.
Heres a informative link, it actually shows a visual how the different options look. I hope this helps.

I use sealer at the end vs wax
I have stencil alot, but are you referring to the furniture wax.
Use Polycrylic to protect the finish. Wax wears away and disintegrates and has to be reapplied to keep on protecting. Polycrylic is once and done.
